If you are not registered to vote get on down to the courthouse and register to vote today. Right Now ! You must be 18 years of age by the next election, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of Tennessee. If you’re all of that, the Election Commission office is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you’re not registered to vote please do so now !
I will now assume that most of you know which voting district you live in.
Let me explain why this is important to know.
At the end of March / beginning of April, the Blount County Democratic Party will elect county district representatives who will be responsible for Party activities for the next two years. Nine of the ten county voting districts will elect two representatives. One male, one female. The one remaining district will elect three representatives. 21 in total. To be a representative you must live in the district you represent. In addition, five Party officers are elected. Chair, 1st and 2nd Vice Chairs, Treasurer and Secretary. Together this group is known as the Executive Committee. This committee is the functional body of the Blount County Democratic Party.
The Party calls this election process ‘reorganization’. It’s actually operates like 10 mini conventions. Each district will hold a ‘caucus’ separate from the other districts . The district representatives are chosen from within each district caucus. One male and one female as noted above. The newly elected district reps then elect the five Party officers.
If you are one of the many Obama supports who would like to help bring the promise of the Obama campaign to Blount County this is an excellent place to start.
We will announce the exact time and place for reorganization as soon as the date has been set by the State Party.
